Stellungahme der Kuratorinnen des Festivals After the last sky im Ballhaus Naunynstrasse

Statement of the festival curators of “After the Last Sky”
at Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Berlin, 25.10.2016
From September 09th until October, 9th 2016, the festival After the Last Sky offered an interdisciplinary arts program at the Berlin-based theater Ballhaus Naunynstrasse. It set out to re-/present the works of renowned contemporary Palestinian artists. Approximately 1500 art-interested participants visited the festival during this time. In its uniqueness, the After the Last Sky festival was an artistic act that opened up spaces for discussion and drew attention to the urgency of a socially relevant critical engagement with art in the context of flight and expulsion.
Eventually, the journalist Johannes C. Bockenheimer appeared and presented himself as an economic journalist in private matters, visiting a few individual events. His report in the Tagesspiegel on October 20th, 2016 includes an overall assessment of the four-week festival with a total of 34 events.
The article appeared under the heading „Against Israel – With Public Funds“ – a strongly tendentious article by Johannes C. Bockenheimer. Bockenheimer is putting the festival in a bad light with the accusation that it had been an anti-Israeli festival, in which violence against the Israeli state was allegedly advocated. These allegations were made quickly and unexpectedly by the journalist.
Based on the principles of the artistic work of the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, the curators strictly reject all forms of anti-Semitism, racism, discrimination, sexism and violence.
The Berlin Senate has announced an examination of the accusations – in view of the rapid and unexamined further distribution of these allegations in other media outlets, we do consider it an important step to counter-check those accusations. The festival program is open to the public and the curators are always available to discuss the program, which is not only organized with the Theatre, but also with representatives of the district.
The curators are severely affected in their personality rights by John C. Bockenheimer’s strongly tendentious and incorrect content, and they will challenge it legally. The accusations that were made are not able to stand up to public and official scrutiny. After the media bashing, which was kicked off by Johannes C. Bockenheimer, the curators demand a careful, differentiated and objective treatment of the unsustainable accusations of Johannes C. Bockenheimer in the German newspaper “Tagesspiegel”.
