Längst haben sich in den meisten europäischen Metropolen Schwarze bzw. afro-europäische Communities etabliert. Ihre Wurzeln reichen oftmals Jahrzehnte, manchmal gar Jahrhunderte zurück. Die Präsenz von Menschen, deren Vorfahren zumindest teilweise afrikanischer Herkunft waren oder sind, ist ein Teil unserer Geschichte und Gegenwart.
Wann, wo und wie aber haben Schwarze Menschen in Europa begonnen, sich selbst zu organisieren? Die von der Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung und der Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD) organisierte Konferenz geht dieser Frage auf den Grund. Gemeinsam wollen wir erkunden, was Schwarze getan haben, um sich unter den schwierigen Bedingungen in rassistisch geprägten Gesellschaften zusammenzuschließen und ihre Interessen kollektiv zu vertreten. Dazu richten wir den Blick auf die historischen Anfänge der Selbstorganisation im Europa der Nachkriegszeit.

Black Europe: The Beginnings of Black Self-Organization in Europe
International Conference, Berlin, 10 – 12 June 2022
Black and Afro-European communities are fixtures of most European metropolises today. Their roots often go back decades, sometimes even centuries. The presence of people of at least partial African ancestry firmly belongs to Europe’s history, present and future.
But when, where and how did Black people in Europe begin to organize themselves? The upcoming conference “Black Europe” intends to get to the bottom of this question. Together, we plan to explore what Black people have done to unite and collectively represent their interests under the adverse conditions they face in racist societies. To this end, we will turn our attention to the historical beginnings of Black self-organization in post-war Europe.
